We were asked to write a review blog today, so I am writing about a book I am reading called “Radical” by David Platt.
I have been concerned about what some call "easy believism" and the need for entertainment in the church. Or just the overall apathay of the American church. The gospel is not an American “thing” it is God’s message to the world.
In his book “Radical”, Platt takes you to home churches where people fear for their lives, so they study the Bible for hours with lookouts watching and under the cover of night and secrecy. They have no music or entertainment - just God’s Word. They have a desperate hunger to learn about God. In one case they left their farm work for a whole week to study God’s word.
What a contrast between what the world calls the "underground church" and church as we know it in the USA. Platt brings up some important issues we in the USA need to seriously think about. He does it with love and a passion for Jesus that is undeniable.
This is one book I highly recommend.
I am curious, what research method did Platt use in writing the book? Did he travel to those places and interview the believers? Did he sit in on their worship and Bible study times? Did he get the information from missionaries?

I will definitely be picking up a copy of the book. I am fascinated by other cultures that sacrifice so much to read the gospel and take such risks to practice their faith in comparison to our American churches. I am concerned that the church in America may have to experience some real persecution to get us to return to a genuine passion for the truth of the gospel.
ReplyDeleteRichard... David taught the bible studies and interacted with the believers. He did travel and is recounting his own experiences. So far, it is a very good book.
ReplyDeleteLarry... I fear you may be right about the American church. Do pick up a copy.
