1Sam 18:23 They repeated these words to David. But David said, "Do you think it is a small matter to become the king's son-in-law? I'm only a poor man and little known."
Those words “I’m only a poor man and little known.” struck me as I was reading them. I thought to myself, how many people have probably said that? How many pastors of small churches have said that? They think that they are to small and that they are not really impacting their community.
The average church size in the USA is 75 to 80 people. That makes up about 60% of the churches in the USA. I know a lot of pastors and the majority of them would fall into this category. But just because you may be small in your eyes, don’t discount what you are doing for the Kingdom of God.
I know of some small fellowships that if you were to look at them you would think they are not making a difference. But in reality they are sending thousands of dollars around the world to missions. Some are affecting the youth of their community, which in turn affects the whole family. The world is won, one person at a time.
We have seen this Internet ministry have contact in 15 foreign countries to date and almost every state in the union. We have had the privilege of participating in the porn event with LifeChurch.tv and XXXChurch.com last month. We have also had opportunities to guest blog for Christian Web Trends Blog, most recently on the topic of Internet Evangelism. God does do abundantly above all that you can ask or think.
So I just want to be an encouragement to any of you who may you think you are just some small insignificant ministry. Or if you are asking yourself am I making a difference? The answer is yes. So stay after it, and there may be a day when you are placed on a much bigger stage just as David was.
Is your church finding ways to make a difference in the lives of others?

From a small church pastor, thanks for the encouragement. I believe God enjoys using that which is small, weak, and seemingly insignificant in the world's eyes. That way all the glory goes to God. When He does great things through small, weak people there is no doubt that it is God who did it, not we ourselves. I think about Gideon, and God telling him that there were too many soldiers for Him to deliever Israel from the Midianites. So God sent most of them home until there were just 300 left to fight over 120,000 of the enemy. Paul said, "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." (2 Cor 4:7 NIV).

We have an intersect program at our Church that gets the people involved in the community. At the moment they encourage the Community Groups to be be involved in that at least twice a year. They also have partnerships with certain groups that are already reaching the community that we can engage with and perform that service.
ReplyDeleteI have been involved as more of an insider; filming etc. Although I believe that my church in making a difference in the lives of people inside and outside because of this. I, personally cannot say that I have. When I can, and when more people in the church can - then that difference is more meaningful and longer lasting.
Thanks. Interesting way to look at it. Most churches are only 75 to 80 people. But when you add them all up! I think are small church does its best in just encouraging and leading Parents in the congregation to be the Moms and Dads God has called them to be.
ReplyDeleteR.Sipes = I think your churches like yours are doing great things for the Kingdom of God. You are making a difference in your community and lives of people.
ReplyDeletePhillip = By doing your part you are encouraging others. We all have gifts and talents from God to use. And it sounds like you are using yours.
Doug = Besides sharing Jesus, that is what church is all about. Sounds like a good healthy church.
