Does porn hurt? - Churches team up for ThePornEvent.com

LifeChurch.tv invited us to blog on this topic for their upcoming ThePornEvent.com.  We appreciate the opportunity to work with LifeChurch.tv and XXXChurch.com to talk about pornography. It is an unspoken topic that is very real and very destructive.

thepornevent.comWill porn hurt your marriage? Will porn destroy your relationships and character? Will porn hurt your ministry and career?

As a pastor, my wife and I counseled couples that were having marital problems.  Now counseling is not my favorite thing to do, but something we did as pastors.  It was disturbing to me that people who brought their bibles and sat in church every week, who participated in church and ministry were involved in all types of sexual perversions.  I had a hard time even believing they were telling me this stuff.  Sure, we counseled them the best we could.  We prayed and asked for God to help, heal and forgive.  We paid for professional help and follow up for these couples. But in the end their marriages failed and their character was destroyed. Porn and its effects certainly played its part in destroying these families.

We have seen the effects of how porn will destroy church leadership and ministry teams on a local and national level.  When this sin is brought to light it brings much shame on the individuals, the leadership the church and the Body of Christ.  All the while, the world around us laughs and says the church is no different than the world.

In my opinion porn and sexual immorality is one of the hardest things to deal with in the church, because of the society we live in, it is common acceptance and practice.  But it certainly is not Godly or what the scriptures teach.  Take a look at some of the statistics from  XXXChurch.com.

(Relevant Statistics from XXX Church)
• 42.7% of Internet users view porn
• 20% of men say they view porn at work.
• 53% of Christian men consume pornography.
• Breakdown of male/female visitors to pornography sites: 72% male & 28% female
• 17% of all women struggle with pornography addiction.
• The average age of first Internet exposure to pornography is 11 years old.
• 90% of 8-16-year-olds have viewed porn online (most while doing homework).

Will porn destroy your career? Recently in the town we live in, an assistant principal was charged with sexual misconduct against a minor. This person once was held a staff position working with children at a church in the area. What did the police find on his computer? Porn.  This person is now a trial, perhaps facing prison and the loss of his job and career.

thepornevent.comDoes porn hurt?  Yes it hurts, but also destroys. Thank you LifeChurch.tv and xxxchurch.com for putting on the porn event.   Our only hope is in the help and forgiveness of Christ Jesus.

1Cor.15:57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. As pastors we need to be better at helping men and women who are dealing with this sin. Recently in my church I tried to help a man who had this problem. What I didn't realize was that I also really needed to help the wife in dealing with her husband's sin. My failure contributed to them leaving our church to find another. I pray that they find the help they need elsewhere.

  2. Porn destroys relationships. A lot of men don't have an accountability partner that they can talk to about these issues. Men need other men who will ask the hard questions. That's why it's important to have a strong men's ministry that will do just that, ask the hard stuff. Thanks Ronnie very eye opening.
